Buck ranges off on his own for an extended period to hunt a huge bull moose. While he is away, Yeehat Indians raid the camp, killing all the dogs and men, including John Thornton. In a fury, Buck attacks the Indians, killing many and driving off the rest. With John Thornton dead, Buck’ s last tie to civilization is broken. He follows the call of the wild to become the leader of a wolf pack, eventually becoming a legendary figure in the wilds of the north.
