As Karen digs deeper, she starts to see the bigger picture of Spanish expeditions and colonialism, the devastating effects on the indigenous people of the Americas, and Columbus’s role in all of it. The Story of Columbus challenges students to learn and unlearn what they know about Columbus and teaches the importance of critical thinking and thorough research. The book can also be used to teach students how to identify main ideas and details as well as identify and use dashes.
